Alexandera Marca. Free of Time, 2020. Coloured pencil and digital render. 18in. x 14 in.
Free of Time was meant to exhibit an animal that represented the artist personally--a spirit animal--in a scene that reflected a current even in our lives at the time. The piece could be completed with any medium, and had to fit within the 18in. x 14in. size constraints.
Free of Time was created with the idea of 'thinking outside the box' and 'breaking free of typical though processes'. At the time of creation, I had been expanding my practice with range of values and learning the breadth that texture brushes had to offer. The owl--the symbol of wisdom and my creative abilities--breaks free from the hourglass that provided typical creative restraints for me as an artist.
This piece was made by first creating sketching the breaking hourglass and the owl separately in sketchbooks, then transferred to coloured illustration paper with transfer paper. These illustrations were scanned, composited, and touched up in Photoshop. Final elements such as outer glows, smoke, and higher contrast were added in Photoshop to add more depth to the piece.
